‘St Hugh’s is an outstanding Catholic school where members of the school and parish community ensure all receive a warm welcome.’ Denominational Inspection Report March 2019

St Hugh's Governing Board

The Governing Board has three core functions.  These include ensuring that the Catholic Ethos and Mission of the school is upheld, to formulate alongside the Headteacher the strategic direction of the school, to support Senior Leaders to ensure the best educational performance for all children as well as overseeing the financial performance to ensure money is well spent.

The Governors generally hold office for a period of four years at a time. During their term, they are encouraged to attend training courses and workshops on a comprehensive range of topics provided by the Local Authority and the Diocese and they receive updates on salient issues from a variety of sources.

Meetings:

The Full Governing Body meets officially once per term. There are also various sub-committees. The Curriculum and Standards Committee and Resources Committee meet termly, although the Resources Committee have additional meetings to approve the budget and to ensure best practice is being followed in managing the school finances.

Foundation Governors:

Foundation Governors at the school represent the interests of the Diocese of Shrewsbury. The role is to ensure that the school is clearly recognisable as Christian in its ethos and that its role is seen in the provision for Catholic children of the Diocese.

Local Authority Governor:

Each Governing Body has one Governor representing the Local Authority.

Parent Governor:

Parents of pupils registered at the school are eligible to stand for election as one of the two Parent Governors. They are elected by other parents at the school.

Staff Governors:

The Headteacher is automatically eligible to be a full member of the Governing Body by virtue of the office. Both teaching and support staff who are paid at the school are eligible to stand as the staff governor. This person is elected by other members of the staff at the school.

Welcome from the Chair of Governors

My name is Sarah-Jayne Williams and I am delighted to be in my third year as Chair of Governors of St Hugh’s Catholic Primary School.  I was elected to the governing body in 2014 and served as the Vice Chair for 2 years before taking the role of Chair.

My daughter Scarlett is currently in year 6 and she is part of the second generation of my family benefiting from the unique education that St Hugh’s provides. Anyone walking through the doors of our school will know that our Catholic faith is central to all that we do.

We are a strong school community, united in our faith, which benefits from exceptionally important and close links with our parish. Fr Pat and Fr Tomasz are a regular and welcome presence in our school to support, encourage and enable the faith journeys of our children.

We are extremely proud of the all the children in our school and they are at the heart of everything we do here at St Hugh’s. We provide a rich and stimulating curriculum and environment to enable each child to reach their full potential.

The strength of our school depends on our wonderful team of staff. We are blessed to have a strong, dedicated and hardworking team who bring a rich mix of skills and expertise both to the curriculum and extra-curricular activities.

As a governing body we work in close partnership with Mr Platt and his Senior Management Team, ensuring the school has strong and effective leadership.

The role of the governors is to challenge and act as a ‘critical friend’.  We are proud to be a high attaining school (Outstanding by Ofsted May 2013 and Outstanding in Denominational Inspection 2019) and our School Development Plan is at the core of the schools’ vision and ethos.  It sets out our stretching objectives and provides focus for our commitment to continuous development at our school.

Our governing body has an exceptional and diverse mix of skills and experience.  This is a voluntary role but a demanding one. Each and every one of them commit considerable time and energy, working tirelessly for the benefit of our school.  In simple terms, we couldn’t function without our governors and I am extremely grateful for their continued commitment and support.

I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank all the parents who encourage and support their children in their journeys here at St Hugh’s.  We are also fortunate enough to have an fantastic PTA who provide invaluable support through their tireless fundraising.

Should you wish to contact me to discuss any matter further, please do so by first contacting the Headteacher Mr Platt.  I look forward to meeting as many as possible of you throughout the year and do say hello when you pass me in the playground.

Kind regards

Sarah-Jayne Williams
