We have been learning that multiplication starts with making equal groups. We have made equal groups with cubes. We have been saying out loud that 2 x 5 is 2 groups of 5 and we draw 2 big circles to represent the 2 groups and then we put 5 cubes in each group. We say this for each multiplication as we do it. We say it then draw it then we add all the cubes in each group together to get our answer. We have realised that multiplication is continuous addition! So for 5 x 2=10 we can also write it as 2+2+2+2+2=10.
Please help your child learn their 2, 5,10 and 3 times tables this year. This is different to counting in 2’s, 5’s, 3’s and 10’s because we are saying 1 times 2 is 2 and 2 times 2 is 4. Then you can ask them these tables mixed up- so please ask 6 times 2 is? Or 9 times 2 is?
